Yoga for Body, Mind & Spirit

Yoga with Polly is one of the primary reasons I moved to Woodgate.  The studio is set in a beautiful, serene garden on Acacia Street, which lifts your mood as soon as you stroll through the gate and creates the perfect setting for exercise and meditation.

We all know that we need to move our bodies regularly, but many of us have developed injuries or chronic stiffness over the years which can make normal exercise classes difficult.  Polly’s yoga classes are designed to cater for the individual capabilities of each student and they have been gradually unravelling chronic tension in my neck, shoulders and back over the last 12 months.  This is enough reason to practice yoga by itself, but it’s not the only benefit.

Iyengar Yoga also helps to slow and soothe mental racing, stress and/or anxiety by bringing the mind’s focus to the intricate details of the body postures.  The effect of that mental slowing can be felt for hours after the class and, with regular practice, can reduce stress and anxiety over time.  But that’s not all…

Slowing the mind helps to bring it into a meditative state, in a similar way to seated meditation, but with the addition of spreading that meditative awareness through the physical body.  It’s like we become the sacred meditative awareness, rather than seeing it as something separate and unattainable that resides outside us.  It’s essentially the meditation you do when you don’t want to (or feel that you can’t) meditate.  Science is now telling us that meditation is one of the best ways to improve our mental and emotional health, so this aspect of Iyengar Yoga is a boon for those who don’t want to sit and contemplate their navels.

The last attraction is Polly, herself, who has been a dedicated yoga practitioner and teacher for most of her life.  Polly is not one of the ubiquitous yoga teachers who studied postures for a couple of years then set up a business – she is a true yogini, worthy of the name, and you’re unlikely to find a better teacher of Iyengar Yoga in Australia.
